Drawings

Every day, I pose new questions to myself, I don't arrive, but rather, I find myself on a continuous journey, is part of artistic practice.

A feeling and understanding for shapes

Sketch by sketch, Bronislava von Podewils acquaints herself with the physicality and movements of the animals, in order take up these experiences in the design of the sculptural works. Much like the early 20th century sculptor Renée Sintenis, the artist uses drawings to develop a feeling for the shape of the animals in order to finally transfer them into three dimensionality.

Using charcoal, ink or graphite pencil, the artist creates drawings that impressively illustrate the intensive study of the animals´ physicality and movement. It is not just about the mere grasping of external characteristics, but above all the gesture, the physical energy and the reproduction of a particular sensibility.

In the contrast of black and withe, of open and densely worked body parts, brief moments of strength and dynamics of the animals are captured with the fleetingness of the technology, with the lightness of the line. The viewer is involved in the work in direct contact

Often, the animals look at their counterparts, calling for a face-to-face dialogue and thus immediate communication. Every once in a while, Bronislava von Podewils uses the subtleness of colors to bring movement and space even more into focus.

Mindfulness and a keen sense of the essential are embedded in her concentrated and tension-filled drawings on diverse subjects.
